Dream Big

CHSC 2015 Graduation
Hello! Welcome to my blog.

My name is Sadie May, and I am the literacy specialist and instructional coach at at small charter school in Denver called Colorado High School. I began my career as a language arts teacher, and I believe that no matter what my title says, I am first and foremost a teacher. Currently I teach only one class, and the rest of the school day I am in all the classes at school working with students, observing teachers, and facilitating in-house professional development. The class I teach is called Advanced language. It is an English language development class, also called English language acquisition, but with my students' help, we renamed it Advanced language, because as emerging bilinguals all my students are truly advanced language speakers.

My aim for this blog is to highlight my teaching practices, talk about the various lessons and units I have taught or am currently teaching, discuss pedagogy and the art of teaching, and to use it as a discussion platform to stay up-to-date in the world of education, a profession that I believe is constantly shifting and changing.

My teaching career began as a student teacher at the Jefferson County Open School in August 2011. At JCOS I taught a variety of classes: Meditation and Enlightenment, Service Learning, Writing Children’s Books, and Graphic Novels. I also co-taught several classes: a writing course, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, and the Civil Rights Movement. It was an incredible experience. Every single class was designed by the teachers and students registered for whichever classes they were most interested in. My student teaching adviser, Benjamin Dancer, told me on the first day that I met him, after asking what I would be teaching, “Dream big.” That has been a part of my teaching philosophy since: to create unique and relevant lessons and units, to aim at trying to have every unit have some sort of a travel/out of classroom experience tied to it, and most importantly to teach beyond the confines that have been established.

I believe that to be a great educator, I must continue to grow professionally. I am creating this blog alongside my students. In my Advanced Language class my students are creating their own personal blogs, and for me to truly be a teacher of writing, I must be a writer myself. I am excited to start this out and have it live throughout the rest of my career.
